| Development Plan for Tirupathi |
The town of Thirupathi is one of the most ancient and sacred pilgrimage spots in India. The name 'Thirupathi' means the "Lord of Lakshmi," -the dwelling of Lord Venkateswara. However, Thirupathi is the major town and transport hub at the bottom of the hill. The main temple is located in ‘Tirumala’ or the "sacred hill." The temple here is said to be the busiest in the world, eclipsing even Rome, Jerusalem and Mecca in the number of pilgrims visiting it
It is the fourth largest city in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Although the district headquarters is 60 km from the city, major government establishments and operations take place in Thirupathi alone. The Thirupathi Urban Development Authority further expanded its horizon to about 400 km² with a total population of about 8 lakhs. |
The physical attributes, infrastructure, connectivity and other tourism details were given due weightage. Apart from the main shrine in Thirumala, this region houses lot of man made and natural heritage marvels. The tourism potentials of Thirupathi and its surroundings are documented. Thirupathi is a very fast growing city with IT, BPO and Health care industries. Thirupathi is now emerging into a major educational, entertainment, tourism and a commercial city in Andhra Pradesh. |
